{"id":925,"date":"2023-02-27T22:59:38","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T03:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=925"},"modified":"2023-02-27T22:59:54","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T03:59:54","slug":"un-seeks-4-3-billion-in-aid-for-war-torn-yemen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/un-seeks-4-3-billion-in-aid-for-war-torn-yemen-27022023\/","title":{"rendered":"UN seeks $4.3 billion in aid for war-torn Yemen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The United Nations has called for $4.3 billion to help millions of people in Yemen, where an eight-year war has left millions in urgent need of urgent aid. &nbsp;The appeal on Monday comes before a donors\u2019 conference, with UN officials warning that \u201crecord global humanitarian needs are stretching donor support like never before\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut without sustained support for the aid operation in Yemen, the lives of millions of Yemenis will hang in the balance, and efforts to end the conflict once and for all will become even more challenging,\u201d the organisation said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wide swathes of Yemen are facing food shortages, with areas of the Marib governorate facing crisis levels and the situation in the northern Hajja governorate expected to worsen given \u201cexpectations for gradually re-escalating conflict and large populations of displaced households who are highly dependent on assistance\u201d, according to the US-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The monitor cited the high price of electricity, fuel and gas prices driven by threats related to the ongoing conflict, which has largely remained in a state of \u201cunofficial ceasefire\u201d since a UN-brokered truce expired in October of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Houthi rebels seized the capital, Sanaa, and overthrew the internationally-recognised government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in 2014.
