{"id":9556,"date":"2026-01-06T22:15:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T02:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=9556"},"modified":"2026-01-06T22:15:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T02:15:17","slug":"venezuela-urges-action-from-the-united-nations-security-council-following-illegal-u-s-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/venezuela-urges-action-from-the-united-nations-security-council-following-illegal-u-s-attacks-06012026\/","title":{"rendered":"Venezuela urges action from the United Nations Security Council following illegal U.S. attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Venezuelan UN ambassador Samuel Moncada on Monday requested action from the Security Council following U.S. strikes against his country over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVenezuela urges the Security Council to fully assume its responsibility and act in accordance with the mandate conferred on it by the UN Charter,\u201d Moncada told an emergency meeting of the council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In that regard, we request that the government of the United States of America be demanded to fully respect the immunities of (Venezuelan) President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, as well as their immediate release and safe return to Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Maduro and his wife were forcibly removed from Venezuela and brought to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moncada demanded that the use of force against Venezuela be clearly and unequivocally condemned by the Security Council, and that the principle of non-acquisition of territory or resources by force be reaffirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also called for measures aimed at de-escalation, the protection of the civilian population, and the restoration of international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVenezuela comes before this Council today with a deep conviction that international peace can only be sustained if international law is respected without exception, without double standards, and without selective interpretations,\u201d said Moncada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UN representative of Venezuela said that Saturday\u2019s military action against Venezuela constitutes a flagrant violation of the UN Charter, in particular, the violation of the principle of sovereign equality of states, of the prohibition of threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, and of the duty to settle disputes by peaceful means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. move also seriously violates the Geneva Conventions and Protocols, the ambassador said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen force is used to control resources, impose governments, or redesign states, we are faced with a logic that harks back to the worst practices of colonialism and neocolonialism,\u201d he said.&nbsp; \u201cThis scenario not only threatens Venezuela, it threatens international peace and security as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the kidnapping of a head of state, the bombing of a sovereign country, and the open threat of further armed action are tolerated or downplayed, the message sent to the world is a devastating one, namely that law is optional, and that force is the true arbiter of international relations, Moncada warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Venezuela Ambassador to the United Nations Samuel Reinaldo Moncada Acosta speaks during a UN Security Council meeting on US strikes and the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, US, Jan 5, 2026.
