Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel highlighted the motivation for the Torchlight March in this capital, commemorating the centennial of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On his Twitter account, the president stated that as the 73rd anniversary of the first parade in which the then-young revolutionary Fidel Castro played a leading role approaches, \u201cwe will light torches on the eve of the birthday of Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed, apostle of Cuban independence and anti-imperialism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The head of state then added: \u201cTonight, another motivation unites us: we march for the Centennial of #Fidel, starting from the University where he became a revolutionary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The parade retraces the route of the midnight march of January 27, 1953, which begins at the steps of the University of Havana, descends San L\u00e1zaro Avenue, and continues to the former quarries of the same name (now Fragua Martiana), the site where the young Mart\u00ed was imprisoned for his pro-independence ideals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tonight, the procession carried the banner of the Centennial Anti-Imperialist Torch, with the country\u2019s top leaders at the forefront, accompanied by thousands of young people in an expression of continuity and anti-imperialist resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
