{"id":9852,"date":"2026-01-30T21:59:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T01:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=9852"},"modified":"2026-01-30T21:59:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T01:59:14","slug":"united-nations-reiterates-stance-against-u-s-blockade-of-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/united-nations-reiterates-stance-against-u-s-blockade-of-cuba-30012026\/","title":{"rendered":"United Nations reiterates stance against U.S. blockade of Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Aziz Haq, reiterated on Friday the United Nations\u2019 position in favor of lifting the US blockade against Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs you know, the General Assembly has repeatedly called for an end to the blockade against Cuba,\u201d the spokesperson stated in response to a question from Prensa Latina regarding the strengthening of this policy, following the new executive order from the Donald Trump administration to unilaterally impose coercive tariffs on countries that sell oil to the Caribbean nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe urge all Member States,\u201d he said, \u201cto comply with the resolutions of the General Assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An executive order issued by the White House on January 29 and signed by the Republican president declared a \u201cnational emergency\u201d regarding Cuba. To address this, it deemed it \u201cnecessary and appropriate\u201d to establish a system of tariffs against countries that provide \u201cdirectly or indirectly\u201d any type of oil to Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Days before Trump\u2019s return to the White House last year, the UN confirmed to Prensa Latina that it welcomed \u201cthe United States\u2019 announcement of January 14 regarding, among other measures, the removal of Cuba from the State Department\u2019s list of state sponsors of terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A belated act by the outgoing Joe Biden administration, but one that was a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after taking office a week later, in his first hours in the White House, Trump reversed Biden\u2019s decision with an executive order, without presenting any new evidence and disregarding the work and judgment of his own government agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reactions were swift.
