{"id":9884,"date":"2026-02-02T16:48:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T20:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=9884"},"modified":"2026-02-02T16:48:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T20:48:17","slug":"mediterranean-dockworkers-set-to-strike-against-arms-flow-to-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/mediterranean-dockworkers-set-to-strike-against-arms-flow-to-israel-02022026\/","title":{"rendered":"Mediterranean dockworkers set to strike against arms flow to Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dockworkers at more than 20 Mediterranean ports are planning a strike next week to protest arms shipments to Israel and their governments\u2019 \u201ccomplicity\u201d in the Gaza genocide, demanding an immediate halt to weapons transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Italy-based grassroots dockworkers\u2019 union, Unione Sindacale di Base (USB), announced it will participate in an international general strike on February 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t take this step, all our other demands will be crushed under war,\u201d Francesco Staccioli of USB warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Italian dockworkers will join colleagues across Greece, the Basque Country, Morocco, and Turkey in a coordinated action opposing the growing militarization of key transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strike aims to prevent arms shipments, reject rearmament, and oppose the impact of a war economy on workers\u2019 rights and social security systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to organizers, the day of action will help \u201censure that European and Mediterranean ports are places of peace, free from any involvement in war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from USB have stated that industrial action against genocide, militarization of ports, and US imperialism are inseparable from local labor struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They stated that European governments have been adopting repressive measures against workers who take action in solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trade unionists from Piraeus in Greece also stressed that if workers stand together, \u201cports can become a barrier to war, not corridors for weapons deliveries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2023, when Israel launched its genocidal campaign in Gaza, a growing number of dockworkers have taken action to block arms shipments to the occupying regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Italian ports and cities saw widespread protests in solidarity with Palestinians and against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni\u2019s government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel launched its brutal Gaza offensive on October 7, 2023, following a historic operation by Hamas in retaliation for the regime\u2019s intensifying atrocities committed against the Palestinian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Gaza-based Health Ministry, at least 71,800 Palestinians have been killed in Israel\u2019s war on Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October last year, a fragile ceasefire, brokered by the United States, was reached in Gaza.
