The Cuban journalists affirmed that his country faces a complex situation due to the intensification of the economic blockade imposed by the United States government, led by Donald Trump. The new measures seek to prevent the supply of oil to the Caribbean island, generating energy shortages and directly affecting the daily lives of its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In an interview with teleSUR, Jorge Lega\u00f1oa, president of the Prensa Latina news agency, emphasized that the nation is preparing for this contingency. He recalled President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel\u2019s declaration: \u201cWe will not stand idly by; we will resolve this through the talent of Cuban men and women,\u201d underscoring a resistance \u201cbased on action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lega\u00f1oa referred to the executive order signed by Donald Trump that establishes tariffs for nations that sell oil to Cuba. The journalist emphasized that this is not a \u201cgift of oil, that no nation gives oil to Cuba,\u201d but rather the \u201clegitimate right of a nation to trade and to seek the minimum resources its people need to live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The president of Prensa Latina warned that the current escalation will be \u201cvery harsh\u201d and will amount to \u201cpractically genocide.\u201d \u201cHow can a people\u2014let\u2019s imagine any country in the world\u2014manage its economy, how can it manage food, its daily life, without oil, without gasoline, without fuel?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The journalist highlighted the resilience of the Cuban people and cited historical examples. \u201cLet\u2019s remember the two years in the 1990s, the Special Period, when Cuba, after the collapse of the socialist bloc, also found itself without 85% of its fossil fuels,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He recalled that this is not the first time a decree or executive order of this type has invoked a national emergency against Cuba. Since 1996, under Bill Clinton, these orders have been revalidated and updated by George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump himself, who in 2018 \u201cincluded the characterization of Cuba as an alleged extraordinary threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jorge Lega\u00f1oa denounced the \u201cmost complicated aspect of all\u201d as \u201cthe issue of Cuba as a supposed terrorist threat,\u201d calling it \u201cmanipulation\u201d without a shred of evidence. He recalled Trump\u2019s first term, when \u201cthe US embassy in Havana accused the Cuban government of sonic attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cuba\u2019s role as guarantor in the peace talks between the Colombian government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) was also used as a pretext. Lega\u00f1oa pointed out: \u201cAfter the breakdown of that dialogue\u2026 the Cuban government, which was a guarantor and had responsibilities toward those guerrillas, was accused of being a state sponsor of terrorism for having protected the guerrillas, because that was what international agreements stipulated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The journalist compared these accusations to previous tactics by Washington: \u201cJust as governments have been labeled, just as President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and Venezuela were unjustly accused of being narco-states, narco-terrorists, or part of the Cartel of the Suns, now they are trying to do the same thing. The same Donald Trump administration, with Secretary Marco Rubio, is trying to label Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism without presenting a single shred of evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jorge Lega\u00f1oa emphasized that the \u201cfalse narratives\u201d of the Donald Trump administration are not new, but rather systematize decades of lies against the Cuban Revolution. He mentioned \u201cOperation Truth\u201d of 1959, which brought journalists to Cuba. He asserted that \u201cthe fake news that is now so popular against this country has been going on for seven decades. Therefore, it is nothing new for the Cuban people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The president of Prensa Latina news agency denounced the \u201cdehumanization of politics\u201d in the United States and suggested that the Trump administration uses issues like Cuba and Iran, and others in the region, to divert attention from domestic problems. These include police violence, anti-immigrant raids, the upcoming midterm elections in Congress and the Senate, and the \u201cEpstein scandal\u201d\u2014just a sample of \u201cwhat the ruling class of this world does\u201d and that \u201cwe often don\u2019t know about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The journalist emphasized that Cuba, over the years, \u201chas sown solidarity through its international aid,\u201d sending doctors, teachers, and engineers in the aftermath of earthquakes and hurricanes. This track record allows it to now \u201creap\u201d the support of nations like Mexico, whose government, under President Claudia Sheinbaum, is \u201cconsistent with Cuba\u2019s actions throughout all these years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regarding the alleged contacts or communications between Washington and Havana, Lega\u00f1oa clarified that the Cuban government \u201chas never stopped engaging in dialogue with the United States government, but these are technical meetings\u201d on matters such as the fight against drug trafficking and counterterrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He pointed out: \u201cThe Donald Trump administration insists that it\u2019s at the highest levels\u2026 and has stated that there is no dialogue at that level today.\u201d However, Havana maintains \u201cthe door completely open to a dialogue between equals, on equal terms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jorge Lega\u00f1oa described the current situation as \u201canother moment of onslaught\u201d and \u201cpoliticization of Cuban reality,\u201d driven by figures like Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, Lega\u00f1oa questioned the veracity of Trump\u2019s claims about contacts and dialogues, noting that the US president often claims to have discussed topics that never materialized. He cited the case of Claudia Sheinbaum, who denied having a conversation with Trump about Cuba. He stated: \u201cThe truth is that there are many manipulated narratives\u2026 those who suffer the most, unfortunately, are our people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
