Former Colombian president calls for flotilla to send aid to Cuba

Former Colombian President Ernesto Samper (1994-1998) has called for the formation of a flotilla of ships and planes to deliver fuel to Cuba, in support of the island suffering the consequences of the intensified US embargo.

In a message posted on his social media account, the former president denounced the shortage of basic necessities such as food and medicine due to the punitive measures of the current US administration and advocated for actions to support Cuba.

“There are no bombings, but there are unilateral measures like the fuel embargo,” he stated.

He then proposed the formation of a flotilla of ships and planes to deliver humanitarian fuel for schools, hospitals, soup kitchens, and nursing homes.

“Cuba cannot become the Gaza of Latin America. Let’s save Cuba,” he urged in his statement.

In the Colombian nation, denunciations are growing regarding the measures implemented by the Donald Trump administration.

One of the most forceful statements was released by the Oil Industry Workers’ Union (USO), which acknowledged how, for more than six decades, “Cuba has survived the siege of the criminal and illegal blockade—which is nothing more than a policy of war—imposed by the United States, a policy of war whose sole objective is to suffocate the daily lives of the people.”

It emphasized that the Caribbean nation does not represent a threat to the security of the United States; on the contrary, it is the latter country that keeps the island under threat.

“The Workers’ Union (USO) stands in solidarity with Cuba, its people, and its government. We reject the genocidal blockade that continues against them. Peoples have the right to self-determination; there is no possible imposition based on supremacism. Cuba is for Cubans,” the USO concluded.

Several campaigns are currently underway in Colombia to deliver essential goods to the island nation.

Solidarity activists and members of the Association of Cuban Residents in Colombia have joined forces to promote the donation of multivitamins and ferrous fumarate for pediatric treatments.

The Solidarity Movement with Cuba, for its part, is promoting an initiative to collect non-perishable food, medicine, medical supplies, and electrical items.
