Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum congratulated the members of the national team today after their 2-0 victory against South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Congratulations to the National Team! Congratulations to all Mexicans,” wrote the head of the Executive Branch on her social media account. She enjoyed the match from the Deportivo Hermanos Galeana, one of the 18 venues in the capital offering free broadcasts of the games.
At the Ciudad de México (Azteca) stadium, at the Fan Fests located at the World Cup venues, and especially at the iconic Angel of Independence monument on Paseo de la Reforma, thousands of people celebrated the Tricolor’s victory in their debut.
The euphoria at the Angel was accompanied by the presence of Mexican national team jerseys, Mexican flags, and traditional songs like Cielito Lindo.
The team managed by Javier Aguirre secured the victory thanks to goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez at the Azteca Stadium, which on Thursday became the only venue to have hosted the opening matches of three World Cups, following those held in 1970 and 1986.
This edition of the tournament will be the first with 48 teams and will be hosted by 16 cities in North America: three in Mexico (Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey), 11 in the United States, and two in Canada.
