U.S. researcher Morris Alper developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model called ConlangCrafter, capable of creating complete languages with grammatical rules and coherent sentences, applicable to linguistic research and cultural production.

The tool doesn’t generate isolated words, but rather coherent systems of linguistic rules, like a grammar. The University of Miami announced that Alper has joined as an assistant professor in Computer Science.
With a PhD from Tel Aviv University and training in mathematics and linguistics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Alper designed the model to translate real sentences, correct inconsistencies, and document the process in a “sketch.”
Alper explained that breaking the “problem” down into parts allows the AI to define sounds, word formation rules, and syntax, achieving more coherent results than common models like ChatGPT or Gemini.
Invented languages have a long tradition in popular culture: the model can support the creation of fictional languages for video games, movies, and series, such as Game of Thrones or The Lord of the Rings.
Applications are also anticipated in the study of poorly documented languages, allowing for the analysis of their evolution and how AI agents communicate with each other, thus expanding linguistic and technological research.
Alper noted that the most difficult aspect was measuring the model’s capabilities, as defining an objective measure for evaluating creative tasks is complex.
The project was developed at Carnegie Mellon University, and Moran Yanuka, Raja Giryes, and Gašper Beguš collaborated on the work. There are approximately 7,000 living languages in the world, of which more than 2,500 are at risk of disappearing, according to UNESCO.
The model opens up possibilities for preserving endangered languages and creating more realistic fictional language systems, combining academic research with applications in entertainment and digital communication.
