Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized this Tuesday that the current US administration’s practice of renaming geographic locations without regard to international norms constitutes an inconsistency with international law.
“The way things are going, the United States government is going to leave its citizens geographically disoriented. Soon they won’t know what gulf, lake, building, country, continent or planet they’re in,” the foreign minister emphasized on his Facebook profile.

The Charter of the United Nations, in Article 2, establishes the obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, which is violated when a country unilaterally imposes names that disregard the legitimate authority of other governments.
This practice contradicts the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (1969), which obliges States to act in good faith in their international relations, and constitutes an act of imposition that disregards diplomatic practice and international custom.
Such actions are part of a policy of disregarding customary international law, which recognizes the validity of official names adopted by States within their territories, and reflect a unilateral stance that erodes the principles of sovereign equality and non-intervention.
Poor advice, improvisation, and the current U.S. secretary of state’s ignorance results in these epic failures in international policy.
