Peru Updates Regulations for Visiting Machu Picchu

On Monday, the Ministry of Culture approved an update to the regulations for visiting Machu Picchu, introducing new access and time limits for several tourist routes, effective January 1, 2027.

The measure follows a technical evaluation conducted by the Cusco Decentralized Directorate of Culture, which concluded that the previous schedules were insufficient to complete some routes within the established safety margins.

Among the main changes is the establishment of 10:00 a.m. as the entry deadline for the Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu routes, while the descent must begin before 12:00 p.m.

For the Machu Picchu Mountain route, the regulations establish a maximum visit time of six and a half hours, including the ascent, descent, and tour of the main archaeological sector.

In the case of Huayna Picchu, the total authorized time will be five and a half hours, considering both the ascent to the summit and the visit to the monumental complex.

The regulations also incorporate the Gran Caverna route as an official alternative within Circuit 3 during peak season, with access and return times similar to those established for the other mountain routes.

The Ministry indicated that this new option will allow for better distribution of visitor flow within the historical sanctuary without increasing the total authorized capacity for the archaeological site.
