Official mourning in Cuba for the death of Uruguayan revolutionary José Pepe Mujica

The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has decreed an Official Mourning for the death of former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica.

The newspaper Granma reported that the measure will extend from 6:00 a.m. local time Friday, May 16th, until 12:00 midnight on Friday, going into Saturday, the 17th.

During the Official Mourning period, the Cuban flag will be flown at half-staff on public buildings and military institutions.

Pepe Mujica, a guerrilla fighter who spent more than 14 years in prison for his struggle against the military dictatorship of his country, died on Tuesday, May 13 at his farm on the outskirts of Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital.

During his long and distinguished career as head of state and political leader, he made important contributions to the integration and unity of Our America, and to the strengthening of relations between Cuba and Uruguay.
