The International Skating Federation, World Skate, informed its skaters how they will be evaluated by judges in the different competitions that make up the current Olympic cycle, which will conclude under the five rings of Los Angeles 2028.
The new requirements include selection and scoring criteria for each competitor’s routines. These will serve as a common reference point for coaches, referees, and athletes.
As stated by World Skate on its official website, the judging standards are based on values and principles globally accepted by the skateboarding communities.
The list of rules to be complied with will take into account the difficulty and variety of tricks performed, the quality of execution and landing, the use of the course and obstacles, consistency, and fluidity in the contestants’ programs.
It was also emphasized that repeating tricks or using the same obstacles repeatedly within a round will be penalized proportionally.
The world skating governing body stated that innovative, progressive, and risky tricks will be highly valued.
It also clarified that the scoring systems evolve with the sport and differ between the men’s and women’s categories.
Regarding the scores, the entity explained that these will go from 0 to 100, with two decimal places and will not be absolute or fixed. The same performance may receive a different score depending on the event or round.
Skateboarders who aspire to qualify for Los Angeles 2028 will have to seek their ticket in official competitions of World Skate and the International Skateboarding Federation.
The International Olympic Committee has not published the exact number of places for the discipline for the next Olympic event, but it is expected that the qualification system will be similar to the one used for the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 editions.
In those events, 20 quotas were allocated in each gender. Of these, 16 quotas were assigned by position in the global ranking, three were obtained in world championships and one was left for the host country of the event.
