The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) expressed its support for the people and Government of Cuba, led by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, and Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, in the defense of their sovereignty and national independence.
The regional bloc stated, in a communiqué on its website, that the Charter of the United Nations constitutes the essential foundation for peaceful coexistence among States, enshrining principles such as sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, and the prohibition of the use of force against territorial integrity.
The organization recognized the trajectory of Cuban foreign policy, based on independence and a commitment to multilateralism, and highlighted its dedication to international cooperation and solidarity with countries of the Global South.
ALBA urged the international community and multilateral organizations to maintain their support for Cuba, in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly resolutions demanding the lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed against the island.
The declaration emphasized that cooperation and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean require responsible actions by states and international organizations, in favor of peace and collective well-being.
The statement is part of a series of regional pronouncements calling for an end to unilateral coercive measures against Cuba.
Due to its importance, Radio Havana Cuba reproduces the regional institution’s statement in full:
STATEMENT FROM THE BOLIVARIAN ALLIANCE FOR THE PEOPLES OF OUR AMERICA (ALBA)
The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) expresses its strongest support and solidarity with the people and Government of the sister Republic of Cuba, its President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, in the just defense of their sovereignty and independence, based on the legitimate exercise of the right to self-determination and to establish friendly and cooperative relations with all governments and peoples of the world, within a framework of mutual respect, sovereign equality, and adherence to International Law.
ALBA reaffirms that the Charter of the United Nations constitutes the essential foundation for peaceful coexistence among States, enshrining universal principles such as the sovereign equality of States, non-interference in internal affairs, the prohibition of the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of any State, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the inalienable right of every people to determine their own political, economic, and social project.
The Alliance recognizes and values the historical trajectory of Cuban foreign policy, built upon a doctrine of independence, national dignity, and a profound commitment to multilateralism. Throughout its history, Cuba has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to international cooperation, solidarity among peoples, and respect for the norms of International Law, contributing consistently to understanding, peace, and collective well-being, especially for the benefit of countries in the Global South.
ALBA urges the international community and multilateral organizations to maintain their firm and unwavering support for the Republic of Cuba, in accordance with the resolutions repeatedly and overwhelmingly adopted by the United Nations General Assembly demanding the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed against that country, and to contribute responsibly to peace, stability and cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean.
