The Cuban government has condemned the new escalation by the United States against the country, which it described as a “brutal act of aggression” against the island and its people.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the new escalation by the U.S. against Cuba,” stated Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez in a message published on his social media accounts. “Now they are proposing to impose a total blockade on fuel supplies to our country,” the Cuban foreign minister stated.
Under the pretext of an unusual and extraordinary threat from Cuba, the Trump administration on Thursday reinforced measures aimed at increasing the blockade against the country’s economy and causing more human suffering.
Trump signed an executive order establishing that his administration could impose tariffs on goods from countries that sell or supply oil to the island.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said that to justify this escalation, Washington “relies on a long list of lies that attempt to portray Cuba as a threat it is not.” “Every day there is new evidence that the only threat to the peace, security, and stability of the region, and the only malign influence, is that exerted by the U.S. government against the nations and peoples of Our America, which it attempts to subject to its dictates, plunder their resources, mutilate their sovereignty, and deprive them of their independence,” he said.
He asserted that “the US is also resorting to blackmail and coercion to try to force other countries to join its universally condemned blockade policy against Cuba, threatening them with arbitrary and abusive tariffs if they refuse, in violation of all free trade norms.”
“We denounce before the world this brutal act of aggression against Cuba and its people, who for more than 65 years have been subjected to the longest and cruelest economic blockade ever applied against an entire nation, and whom it now promises to subject to extreme living conditions,” the Foreign Minister concluded.
Cuban authorities ask: “What will come next?”
Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos R. Fernández de Cossío joined in condemning the latest escalation by the US empire and, in a message on his Facebook page, called on the international community to remain vigilant.
“The international community must be vigilant. Based on a long list of lies that no one believes, the US president has signed an order threatening sovereign states with tariffs if they refuse to join the blockade against Cuba, especially regarding fuel supplies,” the official stated.
Fernández de Cossío asked: “What will come next?” “If this demand is accepted, a new and grotesque chapter of global subservience will begin, opening a dangerous path whose destination is unknown and from which no state with any sense of sovereignty can feel safe,” he emphasized.
The deputy foreign minister noted that “the effect extends beyond Cuba’s borders, although it is our people who have long faced, with stoicism, the cruel and criminal economic war waged by imperialism.”
