Boxing: Saidel and Claro Know of Rivals for Professional Fights

The announcement of Saidel Horta and Alejandro Claro’s opponents provided news about Cuba’s presence on a professional boxing card scheduled for May 1st in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, which also features star Arlen López.

The featherweight Horta, the 2023 World Championship silver medalist in Tashkent, will be looking for his second consecutive victory when he faces Venezuelan Fernando José Toro, who boasts an impressive record of 11 wins (9 KOs) and three losses (2 KOs).

Claro, a two-time world bronze medalist, will also be aiming to replicate his success from his previous bout, which will require him to defeat Colombian Edinson Martínez in the flyweight division. Martínez’s record includes 15 wins (12 KOs), seven losses (5 KOs), and three draws.

When discussing the matter, the president of the Cuban Boxing Federation, Alberto Puig de la Barca, explained that both fights will be eight rounds. He also noted that the opponent for super middleweight Arlen, a two-time Olympic champion and undefeated professional (6-0), has not yet been officially announced.

He said that joint proposals with Agon Sports, the promoter that manages the presence of the Cuban Domadores (Dominoes) on those circuits, are being considered, and he noted that on April 24, Erislandy Álvarez, Lázaro Álvarez, and Yusnier Sorsano will fight in a 10-round bout in Santiago, Chile, on a World Boxing Association (WBA) card.

There, Erislandy (63.5 kg), the Olympic champion from Paris 2024, will face Panamanian José Núñez (17-0-2) for his seventh consecutive victory and in a third defense of his Latin American continental title.

Lázaro (61.3 kg), a three-time world champion and Olympic bronze medalist, will also put his undefeated record (10-0) on the line when he faces Brazilian Jackson Furtado, aiming to reaffirm his continental dominance for the fourth time.

Sorsano (69.8 kg) will be motivated to defend the Federlatin title in his second commitment of that nature, this one against the Argentine Jonathan Wilson Sánchez (26-8-1).
