Chilean doctors from ELAM call for strengthened solidarity with Cuba

Chilean graduates of the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) have condemned the threats made by the United States against countries that provide vital aid to Cuba and called on the world’s people to strengthen solidarity with the island.

On January 29, President Donald Trump signed an executive order labeling the Caribbean nation a threat to his country’s national security and announced the imposition of tariffs on those who supply it with oil.

The international community must take all possible measures to stop this new authoritarian attack by the U.S. government against a people who have shown solidarity with the entire world, according to a public statement from the ELAM alumni association.

Since its founding in 1999 at the initiative of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, ELAM has trained more than 31,200 doctors from 122 countries, including some 700 from Chile.

“Each of the doctors in this battalion of white coats has a moral obligation to take responsibility for protecting the Cuban people,” the organization stated.

The declaration categorically rejects the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the Caribbean nation, which has intensified in recent weeks under the Trump administration.
