Among the agreements, he mentioned steadily developing bilateral relations, and strengthening coordination on international affairs. He remarked that they “will strive to make Sino-Nicaraguan relations a model of solidarity between countries.”

Yuhui stated that China is “a good friend” of the Nicaraguan people and government, and that since re-establishing ties with the Central American country four years ago, “they have achieved very significant results.”

The new Chinese ambassador was received by Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Valdrack Jaentschke, and Advisor for International Relations Ivan Palacios on Saturday at Augusto Sandino International Airport. Jaentschke emphasized that Nicaragua-China relations have the character of a “strategic partnership.”

On Dec. 20, 2023, President Ortega described the agreement between China and Nicaragua to elevate their diplomatic relations to the level of strategic partnership as “the best Christmas present” and great news to the country.

Nicaragua re-established relations with China in December 2021, immediately after severing ties with Taiwan, that was one of its best economic partners and main donors at the time. Nicaragua is thus consolidating its position as one of China’s main allies in Latin America.

Diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Nicaragua were initially established in December 1985, during the first Sandinista government (1979-1990).
