Cristina Fernandez remembers the NO to the FTAA

Integration yes… but without domination,” the former president titled a message she shared this morning on X, referring to the speech given by the then Argentine president at the Summit of the Americas before George Bush, who arrived in Mar del Plata with the objective of having those gathered approve the FTAA.

This November 5 marks two decades since that summit in which a large part of the region rejected Bush’s attempt to impose this proposal for market domination.

Through a video, Cristina recalled the strong speech delivered by Nestor Kirchner, much to the discomfort of the US president.

Yesterday, Tuesday, and today, Wednesday, leaders and activists from labor unions, social movements, and political groups participated in Mar del Plata in the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the rejection of the FTAA.

Regional leaders highlighted the significance of that historic event, which opened a new path of hope and integration in Latin America.

Host Hugo Chavez and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva led a regional uprising that resulted in the rejection of the FTAA, which labor, social, and political movements celebrated at a People’s Summit held parallel to the summit of the hemisphere’s presidents.
