Cuba against fake news to justify imperial intervention

The vice president of the Cuban Institute of Information and Social Communication, Belkys Pérez Cruz, condemned at the Global Media Dialogue in Mumbai the demonization of independent nations and the dissemination of false information to justify imperialist interventions.

She emphasized that nations like Cuba, Venezuela, and Palestine are targets of the negative portrayal of countries that assert their independence.

She also stated that in the international arena, where dominant narratives prevail, Cuba asserts that information should not be a privilege or a tool for oppression, but a fundamental right of every citizen.

Furthermore, Pérez emphasized that advancements in artificial intelligence, streaming, and virtual reality must prioritize amplifying marginalized communities, safeguarding endangered languages and traditions, and ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities.

While acknowledging AI’s potential to drive progress across sectors, she warned of escalating ethical, legal, and privacy concerns demanding urgent global action.

The Cuban representative highlighted AI’s dual-edged impact, noting its capacity to foster societal benefits while simultaneously enabling manipulative tactics such as voice and image deepfakes, digital fraud, and extortion schemes.

To address these risks, she called for fostering robust ethical and cultural dialogues, which should guide the responsible integration of technology into societies while preserving core human values.

Similarly, she urged policy makers to establish legal frameworks that hold innovators accountable and protect vulnerable populations.

The official also proposed a more effective global collaboration among governments, businesses, and international organizations to address these issues, guided by principles of inclusivity and sustainability.
