Cuba celebrates Son Day

Cuba will be hosting from today until May 11 an extensive schedule of events, on the occasion of Son Day.

The Cuban Institute of Music has announced a series of events across the country, featuring dance groups and concert orchestras, in public squares and theaters.

Additionally, there will be educational activities focused on the history and global influence of Son, as well as exhibitions of casino wheels and open dance classes.

The Son Day was created on May 8th by the renowned sonero maestro Adalberto Álvarez, to honor one of the most genuine and deeply rooted musical traditions in Cuban national identity.

The anniversary falls on the birthdays of two iconic figures who shaped and defended the Son – Miguel Matamoros (1894) and Miguelito Cuní (1917).

Furthermore, a new edition of the Matamoros Son Festival will take place in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba during these days, a project that was overseen by Maestro Adalberto Álvarez for many years.

This year’s event is dedicated to the 510th anniversary of the establishment of Villa de Santiago de Cuba, the 100th anniversary of the Matamoros Trio, and the work of Maestro Electo Rosell.

The Cuban Institute of Music invites all Cubans and aficionados of the sonera culture worldwide to join the celebrations.
