Cuban Ambassador thanks Australia for vote against US blockade

Dieguez conveyed her appreciation to Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Matt Thistlethwaite, who received her along with officials from the Latin America division of the Australian Foreign Office, due to the end of her mission.

During the meeting, both officials highlighted the existing potentialities for developing and strengthening bilateral relations in areas such as sports, health, education, culture, biotechnology, and mining.

The Cuban diplomat was also received by Australia’s Governor-General, Samantha Joy Mostyn with whom she talked about the development of bilateral ties and, in particular, cooperation between the two countries in education.

Dieguez highlighted the implementation in Australia, as of 2012, of the Cuban literacy method “Yo Si Puedo” (Yes, I Can) in 13 Aboriginal communities in New South Wales, Queensland, and the Northern Territory, where more than 300 students have graduated.

Both Mostyn and Thistlethwaite acknowledged the Cuban diplomat’s work and conveyed their best wishes for success in her future missions.

Australia was one of 165 countries that voted in favor of the resolution submitted by Cuba to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the need to end the blockade that successive US administrations have maintained against the island for more than 60 years.

The resolution was approved by an overwhelming majority.
