Cuban president arrives in Moscow

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, leading the delegation from the Caribbean nation that will participate in the events marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory over fascism, arrived in Moscow Tuesday morning.

The president arrived in the capital of the Eurasian nation from St. Petersburg, the city where he began his official visit to the Russian Federation, Prensa Latina reported from Vnukovo Airport.

On the airport platform, the head of state was received by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and the deputy head of the Cuban mission in Moscow, Ambassador Enrique Orta.

During his stay in what is known as the Capital of the Russian North, Díaz-Canel paid tribute to the defenders of the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) at the Motherland Monument in the Pikarievski Cemetery.

The head of the Caribbean state was later received by the Governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, at the Smolny Palace, where they held official talks.

Upon his arrival at Smolny Palace, Díaz-Canel laid flowers before the statue of Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924), founder of the first socialist state and leader of the working class, and then visited the office and the room once used by the leader of the October Revolution at this location.

The president inaugurated the exhibition ¡Oh, Havana Transit! at the palace, featuring works of art about Cuba in homage to emblematic places and the society of the Caribbean nation.

After the meeting with Beglov, Díaz-Canel visited internationally renowned scientific and technological centers of importance for Russian-Cuban bilateral cooperation. Among them was the Vertex pharmaceutical company, located at the Novoorlovskaya site of the city’s Special Economic Zone.

During the tour, he familiarized himself with the company’s finished product line, which ranges from life-saving medicines to cosmetics.

He also visited, along with the Governor of St. Petersburg, the electromagnetic compatibility and climatic testing laboratories, comprehensive testing centers, and innovative energy centers of PJSC Rosseti’s Intelligent Digital Networks Laboratory.

The Cuban president is one of nearly 20 leaders who confirmed their attendance at the commemorations of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory over Fascism and the End of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).
