Cuba’s Dream Has Come to an End

Cuba’s men’s national soccer team lost a decisive game to Bermuda, two goals to one, and was left out of the path to the 2026 World Cup.

Playing at home at the “Antonio Maceo” Stadium in Santiago de Cuba, the Leones del Caribe (Lions of the Caribbean) were surprised by an early goal by Djair Parfitt-Williams in the 6th minute.

The Cuban team began the match with a sluggish start, but little by little, they took control of the match and closed the first half better.

In the second half, Cuba’s perseverance was rewarded, as Jorge Aguirre proved to be one of the best in our squad and scored the equalizer in the 58th minute. That result left Cuba out of the decisive round of the qualifying round.

But Bermuda did not let up and found the space, even with Cuba’s dominance. Reggie Lambe scored at 74 and “chilled” the Cuban fans, who hoped for another score, but it never came.

Thus concludes the Cubans’ transit through the second round of the qualifying round in our geographic region, leaving in their last two games a feeling that the squad could have done better against affordable rivals. The dream of advancing to the World Cup is once again postponed, from very early on.
