Ecuadorian group Teatro Ensayo Gestus to perform in Cuba

This year, the group presents “The Announcement,” a free adaptation of Eugene Ionesco’s play “The Chairs,” the second work by the Romanian-French playwright included in the South American company’s repertoire.

“Through the absurd, Ionesco addresses the contradictions of contemporary communication in today’s world. It is a magnificent reflection of the tragic and farcical aspects of our existence,” Virgilio Valero, artistic and general director of the production, told Prensa Latina.

The tragic farce tells the story of two characters living in isolation on an island, awaiting a group of people to whom they will make a momentous announcement, one that will save humanity.

“The Advertisement” recreates the comical and the absurd through minimalist and symbolic resources. It also generates moments of interaction with the audience, the theater artist explained.

The show has toured the international festivals of Manta, Loja, and FIARTES-G in Ecuador (2022 and 2023).

Valero highlighted the opportunity to participate for the sixth time in the Caribbean theater event: “It’s an exchange of cultures, and also a comparison of our production with the stage proposals of Cuban and international groups.

“This beautiful gathering is generated by our faith in theater as a catalyst for human growth,” he added.

The production will be presented at the Hubert de Blanck theater in Havana on November 8, 9, and 10, as part of the Havana Theater Festival program.
