Havana Government Council analyzes critical issues

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba, Manuel Marrero Cruz, chaired an Extraordinary Council of the Havana Government in which issues related to the upcoming school year, summer activities, and basic services in the capital were discussed, according to Canal Habana.

For the 2025-2026 school year, Havana will have nearly 274,000 students in approximately 1,170 educational institutions, with the challenge of completing teacher coverage in the municipalities of El Cerro, La Lisa, Boyeros, 10 de Octubre, and Guanabacoa.

Regional authorities evaluated strategies to guarantee staffing, particularly in Basic Secondary and Pre-university, levels with the greatest teacher shortages.

During the meeting, it was reported that summer activities prioritized family enjoyment and community participation in the organization.

Regarding the water supply, a complex scenario was described, although greater stability is expected with actions such as the repair of sections of the Cuenca Sur and La Lisa pipelines, work on the El Gato fountain, and the installation of seven new pieces of equipment at the main water supply sources.

Solid waste collection was identified as an outstanding issue due to the deteriorating technical availability and a lack of spare parts for the replacement of sanitation equipment.

Among the areas experiencing the greatest challenges in urban cleanup are Centro Habana, Marianao, Cerro, Arroyo Naranjo, Habana del Este, and Guanabacoa.

The Council concluded with the guidance to continue evaluating solutions in each municipality to improve the city’s basic services.
