On Tuesday, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced that the next World Chess Championship will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 25 to December 15.

The tournament will pit the current world champion, Gukesh Dommaraju of India, against the challenger Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan. This match will be the final featuring the youngest contenders in history, since both are 20 years old.
The championship will consist of 14 classical games, and the first player to reach 7.5 points will win the title. In case of a tie, rapid tiebreakers will be used.
Sindarov qualified after winning the FIDE Candidates Tournament held in Cyprus in April, while Gukesh enters as the reigning champion after defeating Ding Liren of China in Singapore in 2024, becoming the youngest world champion in history at 18 years old.
FIDE explained that it chose Geneva because it is “neutral territory” and because of its tradition of fostering closer ties between nations and cultures. The country has already hosted previous World Championships: in Lausanne in 1998 (Karpov vs. Anand) and in Bresaggo in 2004.
FIDE’s interim president Viswanathan Anand emphasized that Switzerland will offer local fans the opportunity to enjoy top-level chess in person, while millions will follow the battle online.
The choice of Geneva reinforces the international dimension of chess and marks a new chapter in the rivalry between two young talents who represent the future of the sport.
