DRC Ebola Cases Top 5,100

The epidemic now registers a case fatality rate of 47.4%, according to the Ministry of Public Health’s bulletin with data compiled up to August 17. The official report detailed that 782 patients remain in isolation or hospitalized, 1,091 people have recovered, and the contact tracing rate stands at 84.1%.

The outbreak surpassed 5,000 infections less than two weeks after exceeding 4,000 cases, making it the fastest‑spreading outbreak since its declaration.

World Health Organization Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the situation has the potential to reach the figures of the West Africa outbreak between 2014 and 2016, which left 11,000 dead and 28,000 infected.
