Trump to End Annual US$4 Billion Military Aid to Israel

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his administration will end the US$4 billion in annual aid to Israel by the end of 2026, arguing that the country no longer needs this economic and military support.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump explained that the resources provided to Israel include both military assistance and economic transfers, and maintained that the country’s current economic strength makes its continuation unnecessary.

The U.S. president stated that the decision was discussed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who, according to Trump, raised the possibility of ending U.S. aid.

Trump noted that Israel has been one of the main recipients of U.S. foreign aid and asserted that the bilateral relationship will remain strong despite the suspension of these funds. The current aid memorandum between the two countries, signed in 2016, provides for U.S. contributions of US$3.8 billion annually from 2019 to 2028.

The potential cancellation of this aid has gained prominence in the U.S. political debate and has become a key issue during the midterm elections. Trump and Netanyahu have also expressed differences regarding the war against Iran and strategies for addressing the regional crisis.

While Trump has indicated a preference for keeping negotiations open and exploring what he calls “diplomatic solutions,” the Israeli government has advocated a position more favorable to increasing military pressure.

The announcement comes amid persistent tensions in the Middle East and a debate about the role of the United States in financing and providing strategic support to its main international allies.
