It is time to end the ‘failed experiment of open borders,’ the U.S. President says in rejection of migration flows.
At the 80th United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said, “It’s time to end this failed experiment of open borders.”

In his speech, Trump focused on fighting immigration, condemning “globalist movements”, and calling for “strong measures” to quickly curb irregular migration. He said immigration worldwide is “out of control” and told world leaders that “your countries are being ruined” by migrants.
The Republican leader claimed that prisons in countries such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland are filled with inmates who were asylum seekers who, “in return for kindness, repaid with crime.”
“It’s time to put an end to this failed experiment of open borders. You have to end it once and for all. Believe me, I can tell you I’m a real expert on this issue. Your countries are going to hell,” he said and warned attendees that, in the pursuit of being “politically correct,” Europe is on the verge of succumbing to the “monster” of migration that “is destroying your heritage.”
“I worry about Europe. I love Europe. I love its people, and it pains me to see it affected by the energy crisis and immigration,” he said, also referring to the purchase of crude oil by some European nations and to European clean-energy policies, which he also criticized while defending the use of coal, the resource of which the U.S. has “the largest reserves in the world.”
The United Nations Creates Problems and Lies: Trump
The Republican leader also accused the United Nations of “failing to solve the problems it should address frequently” and of creating “new problems that we then have to fix.”
“The United Nations is funding an attack against Western countries and their borders,” Trump said, claiming the organization “budgeted US$372 million in economic aid to support the journey of about 624,000 migrants to the United States.”
“Imagine that! The U.N. supports those who enter the United States illegally, and then we have to deport them,” added the far-right politician, who has enforced a hard-line policy of fortified borders and mass deportations.
But that was not all. In his speech before the United Nations General Assembly, Trump attacked the multilateral institution on several fronts with personal and superficial arguments:
The United Nations does not solve conflicts: Trump boasted that he has resolved seven global wars during his second term, adding, “Too bad I had to do these things instead of the United Nations. It’s a shame that in all those cases the UN didn’t even try to help in any of them when I ended seven wars.”
The United Nations is inefficient: According to Trump, the U.N. “has tremendous potential, but all they seem to do is write very strongly worded letters and then not follow through. It’s all talk.”
The United Nations refused to hire his company to renovate its headquarters: Trump claimed he submitted a US$500 million proposal “to renovate the building and everything would have been beautiful, but they decided to go in another direction, which turned out to be much more expensive and a far inferior product.”
The United Nations has lied about climate change: The U.S. president elaborated on warnings about rising global temperatures and the effects of climate change from UN experts, saying, “All those predictions made by the UN and many others, often for the wrong reasons, were wrong. They were made by stupid people.” Trump then labeled global warming a “climate hoax.”
