Guatemala: President Arevalo to present initiatives to fight gangs

To move forward building a safer country, one of the most heartfelt demands of Guatemalan families, we must strike a decisive blow to one of the main enemies of the people: organized crime, the head of state emphasized.

One of the priorities of his government is the proposal for adjustments to the sentencing system and new rules to prosecute gangs, together with the creation of a maximum-security prison for gang members, with extreme surveillance mechanisms, which will work under constitutional parameters, Arevalo commented.

We will allow, at the discretion of the director of the prison system, the isolation of prisoners for up to 30 days, which can be extended, the 66-year-old politician emphasized, one day before another birthday.

He specified that these include increasing the sentences for extortion and usury from eight to 15 years, that any foreigner linked to these crimes will be immediately expelled, and that all those found guilty will have their bank accounts and financial services blocked.

While they (the Public Ministry) continue to release suspected criminals when we capture them again and again, we propose concrete solutions to address the needs of Guatemalans who want to live in peace and tranquility, the president stated.
