Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba to perform in Bulgaria for the first time

Following its success in Thailand, where the company performed as a guest at the 27th Bangkok International Festival of Dance & Music, the largest and most prestigious annual arts event in that Asian nation, the Cuban company is moving to a new foreign stage, this time in Europe.

A release from the organization noted that the show chosen for both performances is ¡Cuba Vibra! (Cuba Vibrates!), which illustrates the blend of Spanish and African roots that define the culture of this Caribbean country, the Iberian passion, and the spirituality inherent to Afro-Cuban dances and songs.

The work stands out for its predominance of the “fusion style,” which identifies the company and uses elements of Spanish dance, ballet, contemporary dance, folklore, and diverse Cuban, Afro-Cuban, and urban popular dances.

Given the appeal of fusion in Bulgaria, director, choreographer, and teacher Lizt Alfonso also received an invitation to teach a master class in the style, in conjunction with her company’s performances in the city of Panagyurshiste.

¡Cuba Vibra! showcases rhythms that have made history in Cuba from the 1950s to date, incorporating closely related foreign influences.
