Chile: Candidate condemned for denying dictatorship crimes

Founded in 2023, this program involves the State for the first time in the search for the whereabouts of more than 1,100 people murdered during the Augusto Pinochet regime (1973-1990).

On the National Day of the Politically Executed, Matthei was questioned on Radio Cooperativa station about the issue and said, “For many people, this is not a search plan, but one of revenge.”

She also criticized the National Institute for Human Rights and announced that she will not continue with the construction of the Museum of Memory in the city of Concepcion.

The statements by the right-wing presidential candidate reflect a clear setback in human rights, the AFDD denounced in a statement published on social media this Friday.

The organization warned that “regardless of the government in power or the denialist speeches by the far right,” it will continue fighting for truth and justice.
