Cuba denounces electrical collapse amid U.S. economic stranglehold

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez has denounced that the collapse of the National Electrical System — the Sistema Electroenergético Nacional (SEN) — is occurring within a context of maximum strangulation of the country’s economy and electrical sector by the United States.

“The genocidal oil blockade has not been enough for them. They are persecuting and sanctioning Cuban and foreign companies linked to this strategic area.”

The Cuban foreign minister warned that US leaders, particularly Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are indifferent to the suffering of thousands of families, the hundreds of hospitals without electricity, and the loss of food due to lack of refrigeration.

“They are condemning the Cuban people to collective punishment with a single purpose: to destroy the Revolution, its achievements, and its history. Cuba is not a threat.  The blockade is.”

The National Electric System (SEN) was restored this Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. local time, after a total outage the previous day caused by the shutdown of unit one of the Felton thermoelectric plant, reported the Cuban Electric Union (UNE).

According to Energy and Mines Minister Vicente de la O Levy, who spoke to the press, this interruption, the third in the last eight days, is primarily due to an electrical system severely affected by the blockade and, in particular, by the executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump prohibiting oil imports to Cuba.

He explained that the country continues to experience a total fuel shortage and lacks access to spare parts for thermoelectric units and for those of Energás.

Since the end of 2024, the National Electric System (SEN) has suffered several total disconnections, amid the multimillion-dollar effects of the more than 60-year economic blockade that Washington maintains against the Caribbean country, which prevents access to the resources necessary for the maintenance and development of the sector.
