Cuba reaffirms commitment to eliminating colonialism at the United Nations

Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to decolonization and the right of peoples to self-determination this Thursday before the General Assembly’s Fourth Committee in New York.

The diplomat — as noted by the Cuban Mission to the UN via its Facebook profile — pointed out that, more than six decades after the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, colonialism persists as a practice contrary to the UN Charter.

He said that this form of domination limits economic and social development, affects identity, and violates the sovereignty of peoples.

Soberón warned of contemporary manifestations of domination, such as the exploitation of natural resources, the extraterritorial application of national laws, and unilateral coercive measures.

In this context, he denounced the economic, commercial, and financial blockade—aggravated by an energy embargo—imposed by the United States against Cuba, alongside other measures aimed at pressuring the people and undermining national independence.

The ambassador reiterated Cuba’s solidarity with Puerto Rico, Palestine, and Western Sahara, while underscoring the need to keep decolonization a priority on the UN agenda.

He highlighted the proclamation of December 14 as the International Day Against Colonialism, an initiative that helps raise awareness and give visibility to the organization’s efforts to eradicate it.

In closing, Ernesto Soberón called for intensified collective efforts to put a definitive end to colonialism and reaffirmed that Cuba will continue to defend sovereignty and the right of peoples to decide their own future.
