On Friday, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez met with Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.

Rodriguez expressed his gratitude for the work of the High Commissioner’s office and highlighted the exchange on the situation in Cuba. He reaffirmed the Cuban government’s commitment to the exercise of human rights and emphasized its willingness to continue cooperating in multilateral UN forums.
The meeting took place weeks after UN experts warned of the deteriorating living conditions in Cuba and called for international attention to the economic and energy difficulties facing the country.
Rodriguez participated in various events of the High-Level Segment of the General Assembly, where he presented Cuba’s positions on climate change. During a meeting dedicated to sea-level rise, he warned that Cuban scientists project significant impacts for numerous coastal communities on the island.
In his remarks, the foreign minister maintained that Cuba’s economic limitations reduce its capacity to respond to climate challenges and called for greater resources for countries in the Global South.
Rodriguez also addressed the meeting of foreign ministers of the Ibero-American Conference, where he emphasized the importance of strengthening regional cooperation, dialogue, and respect for international law.
At that forum, he thanked the Ibero-American countries for their expressions of solidarity with Cuba. The minister affirmed that the Ibero-American Conference has consolidated itself over its 35 years of existence as a space for political coordination and the development of common programs.
