Gianni Infantino re-elected as FIFA president

The president of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, was re-elected today to remain in office until at least 2027, at the organization’s 73rd Congress.

Speaking ahead of the announcement of his continuity, Infantino spoke about FIFA’s achievements during his seven years at the helm of the organization, including the holding of what he considered “one of the best World Cups in history” in Qatar in 2022.

“In Qatar the stadiums were excellent, the infrastructure perfect, zero incidents. Some might say it was because people didn’t drink alcohol, we don’t know, but it was a very peaceful tournament,” he stressed in his speech.

Infantino’s re-election comes amid the announcement of the increase to 48 nations for the World Cup in 2026, to be organized by the United States, Mexico and Canada, a decision that expands the participation of countries and generates more soccer matches.
