God Is Not With the Wicked and the Arrogant: Leo XIV

The Pope responds to Trump’s attitude by reaffirming his commitment to peace.

On Tuesday, on the second day of his visit to Algeria, Pope Leo XIV delivered a statement against violence from a nursing home in Annaba, a locality where St. Augustine served as bishop.

“But the heart of our Father is not with the wicked, the arrogant, the proud; the heart of God is with the small and the humble. With them, He advances His Kingdom of love and peace,” Leo XIV said, one day after U.S. President Donald Trump accused him of being “weak” in foreign policy.

“I am happy because God dwells here, because where there is love and service, there is God. I think that the Lord, from heaven, seeing a house like this, where people seek to live together in fraternity, can think: there is hope! Yes, because the heart of God is torn apart by wars, violence, injustices and lies,” he said.

Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Algeria began on Monday, marked by Trump’s remarks criticizing the pontiff, urging him to stop “appeasing the radical left” and calling him “weak” and “terrible in foreign policy,” in reference to the pope’s criticism of the war in Iran.

This comes in addition to the publication of an AI-created image in which the Trump appears portraying Jesus Christ and apparently healing a sick person lying in a bed.

On the plane to Algiers, the U.S.-born pope responded by saying he was not “afraid” of the Trump administration and that he would continue to strongly raise his voice against war.

On Tuesday, the president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE), Luis Argüello, rebuked Trump’s attacks against Leo XIV.

“I want to once again express communion with the pope, support for the pope, and to push back against such crude attacks,” Argüello said, recalling that Leo XIV “has sought to make peace in the world and the search for concrete means for peace one of the guiding lines of his pontificate.”
