Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched a large-scale ballistic missile attack on U.S. military bases in Jordan, targeting facilities for American fighter jets in retaliation for U.S. strikes on five Iranian oil tankers.

The IRGC said the operation, dubbed “Punishment of the Aggressor,” used both solid- and liquid-fuel ballistic missiles. It identified Al Azraq air base as a primary target and said additional strikes were reported at the Muwaffaq Salti and Prince Hassan air bases.

According to the IRGC’s public relations office, the missiles struck maintenance hangars, parking areas and shelters used by U.S. F-35, F-16 and F-15 fighter jets at Al Azraq. The Iranian force said multiple impacts were recorded within the facilities.

Videos documented what were described as direct missile strikes on the U..S bases. The Jordanian military, however, denied that the attacks caused casualties or damage.

The Iranian operation came after U.S. Central Command forces attacked five Iranian crude-oil tankers on Sept. 8, according to the IRGC statement.

The latest strikes also followed two attacks by the IRGC on U.S. Navy warships with ballistic missiles over the previous 48 hours. U.S. forces said the targeted vessel evaded the attacks, suffered no personnel casualties and continued its patrol operations.

As the missile attack unfolded, the Jordanian air force deployed fighter jets to try to intercept the projectiles over Jordanian territory, according to the Iranian account. The IRGC also said U.S. Patriot air-defense systems deployed in the area had been exhausted.

Iranian military commanders portrayed the attacks on the tankers as evidence that U.S. forces were weakening. In a message to the Iranian public, the military command said, “Your constant resilience has exhausted the American enemy, while the strength and resistance of Iran’s defenders in the Strait of Hormuz have left White House leaders confused and desperate.”

The Iranian military said the U.S. maritime attacks had received an immediate and forceful response on Jordanian territory.
