President of Italy’s Lazio region reaffirms support for Cuba

The president of Italy’s Lazio region, Francesco Rocca, reaffirmed to the Cuban ambassador to Italy, Jorge Luis Cepero, his support for the island nation in the face of the tightening of the US embargo, according to a statement released in Rome.

A note published on the official website of the Presidency of this central region, whose capital is Rome, highlights that during the meeting, held yesterday at the local government headquarters, Rocca emphasized the commitment to strengthening ties with Cuba, based on “solidarity, responsibility, and cooperation.”

In that dialogue, marked by mutual understanding, the difficult situation facing Cuba was addressed, primarily as a consequence of increased economic pressure and threats of aggression from the United States, with restrictive measures that violate human rights, amid a complex global context.

Rocca emphasized the interest of his region, which has significant political and economic influence in Italy, in strengthening relations with Cuba, “convinced that institutional cooperation and dialogue between regions can be concrete tools for building opportunities in all areas,” including health, education, and culture.

A strengthening of traditional support for Cuba in Italy is evident in Lazio, and particularly in the city of Rome, the region’s and the country’s capital, with various events, including the massive demonstration on April 11, in which tens of thousands of people expressed their solidarity.

On April 2, the Rome City Council approved a resolution stating that “unilateral coercive measures, which affect access to essential goods, disproportionately compromise the fundamental rights of the civilian population” in Cuba, and emphasizing the importance of taking action against the US blockade.

In this regard, in his recent meeting with Cepero, the President of Lazio “reiterated the need to maintain a high level of attention to the living conditions of the Cuban people, expressing his hope in any initiative that can alleviate the suffering of the citizens and foster development prospects,” the source added.
