On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said relations between Russia and Azerbaijan continue to advance in the spirit of the alliance declaration signed in 2022, despite existing problems.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to continue our dialogue at the level of foreign ministers,” he said during the reception for Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in Moscow.
According to Lavrov, this demonstrates that the two countries, which are geographic neighbors, are moving toward fully realizing the potential of their relationship.
“This year, thanks to the agreements reached at the highest level and the work of our governments and ministries, all issues related to the consequences of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash that occurred on Dec. 25, 2024, have been resolved,” the Russian diplomat said.
At the time, Baku accused Moscow of mistakenly shooting down an Azerbaijani passenger plane while repelling a Ukrainian drone attack in its airspace. More recently, the parties declared the matter resolved after it triggered a serious bilateral diplomatic crisis.
Bayramov’s arrival in Moscow comes just days after Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev reiterated his country’s support for Ukraine.
The Kremlin subsequently said Azerbaijan’s position on the conflict was “mistaken” and that contacts with Baku would continue to explain the Russian view on the matter.
