On Monday, the Paraguayan Olympic Committee (COP) reported that golfer Sofia Garcia and speed skater Julio Mirena were chosen as Paraguay’s flag bearers for the 13th South American Games.

The Games will be held in Santa Fe, Argentina, from September 12 to 26. COP president Camilo Perez emphasized that both athletes represent examples of effort and are proof that, with training, it is possible to reach the highest levels of sport.
Garcia made history in 2023 by becoming the first Paraguayan to win a Pan American Games gold medal, while Mirena is considered one of the fastest speed skaters on the continent.
Both are among Paraguay’s top medal hopes in Santa Fe, where the country has set a goal of winning at least 36 medals, as Perez noted during the flag-bearing ceremony.
The leader recalled the historic haul of 48 medals achieved at the previous South American Games, hosted for the first time in Paraguay, and expressed confidence that the “Guarani spirit” would once again be on display.
The Paraguayan delegation will consist of 343 athletes, fewer than the 574 who participated in the Games four years ago, which reflects an adjustment in national representation.
The athletes will compete in 32 of the 43 sports scheduled for this edition, which opens the Olympic calendar in the Latin American region and brings together thousands of athletes from different countries.
