On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an emergency appeal by Missouri officials seeking to use a new congressional map in the November midterm elections, a decision that initially left the state set to revert to its previous district boundaries.

The nation’s highest court declined Missouri’s request to suspend a ruling by the Missouri Supreme Court last week that blocked the use of the new congressional map drawn by Republican state lawmakers. The state Supreme Court ruled that Missouri must use the congressional district map drawn after the most recent census.
The Missouri Supreme Court also ordered that the new congressional map be put before voters in November, when they cast ballots in the midterm elections, to determine whether it can take effect in subsequent elections.
President Donald Trump and Missouri Republicans opposed the state Supreme Court’s ruling. On Friday, Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway filed an emergency appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court, asking it to reinstate the new map for the November elections. The Supreme Court rejected the request on Tuesday.
U.S. states typically redraw their congressional districts based on the results of the decennial census. In 2025, however, Texas Republicans broke with that tradition and pursued another round of redistricting roughly five years after the previous nationwide redistricting cycle. The move triggered a series of battles between Republicans and Democrats over congressional district maps.
As part of a nationwide Republican effort to gain more seats in Congress, Republican lawmakers in Missouri redrew the state’s congressional districts last year.
U.S. media outlets reported that the Supreme Court’s decision marked a setback for Republican efforts to use mid-decade redistricting to strengthen their position ahead of the November midterm elections.
