UK Royal Mail Announces Restructuring Plan That Eliminates 2,500 Jobs

The measure will affect only administrative and support roles, while frontline staff, such as mail carriers and drivers responsible for mail delivery, will continue in their positions without changes.

According to the company, the job reduction represents over 2% of its total workforce of approximately 131,000 employees. The adjustment will be carried out through voluntary redundancy programs, not through involuntary redundancies.

Royal Mail explained that the decision is a response to a business transformation driven by the continued decline in letter volume, a service that has historically been its core business, even though the parcel delivery segment has experienced significant growth.

The company stated that it is undergoing a period of “profound” change to adapt to an increasingly competitive and e-commerce-oriented market. In this context, it seeks to modernize its structure and improve its operational efficiency.

According to the statement, the plan includes simplifying processes and functions in different areas of the organization. The review aims to reduce costs, streamline internal management, and facilitate adaptation to the new demands of the postal and logistics sector.

Royal Mail CEO Alistair Cochrane stated that the restructuring will be managed fairly and respectfully in coordination with the unions. While acknowledging that the changes will be difficult, he maintained that they constitute an important step toward building a stronger and simpler company.
