UK will send illegal migrants to old military bases

UK Secretary of State for Immigration Robert Jenrick said on Wednesday his government plans to use old military bases and ships to detain illegal migrants arriving via the English Channel.

This is part of an immigration reform with which London wants to expedite expulsions and ultimately limit the flow that arrives by sea.

The senior official argued before the House of Commons that the government wants to include former bases in Lincolnshire, Essex and East Sussex with the capacity to house thousands of people.

Jenrick also acknowledged that the system is overwhelmed by the increase in immigration, and that if the new ideas are put into practice there will be complaints from the communities that may be affected by the new detention centers.

For their part, local media outlets highlight that the opposition questioned the ability of the government headed by the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, to deal with the problem generated by illegal immigration.
