2026 World Cup Kicks Off With Historic 48-Team Format

This is the third World Cup hosted by Mexico (after 1970 and 1986), making it the first country in history to host three editions, now in a joint format with the United States and Canada, and featuring 48 teams and 104 matches.

While streets are filled with green jerseys and a festive atmosphere from early morning, President Claudia Sheinbaum decreed remote work for government offices and the suspension of classes in the capital to mitigate traffic congestion and ensure safety during the day.

The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) deployed more than 5,000 police officers in a special operation that includes securing hotel zones, the area surrounding Azteca Stadium, and tourist corridors.

According to Brenda, a fan preparing to attend the stadium, the atmosphere among the fans is mostly calm and confident, with the expectation that “the protagonist will be the ball and the Mexican fans.”

This year’s tournament introduces a new competition format, since the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, along with the eight best third-placed teams.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be held from June 11 to July 19, will have its final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and the opening at the Azteca is expected to be remembered as a historic chapter in Mexico.
