Belarusian president reaffirms willingness to help Cuba

Belarus is prepared to help Cuba to the extent possible, the Belta news agency reported today, citing the country’s president, Alexander Lukashenko.

The day before, the head of state met with Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdés, who was attending the plenary session of the 5th Eurasian Economic Forum in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

“We are fully aware of what is happening in our friendly country. We are prepared to do everything within our power and as much as the situation allows for Cuba,” Lukashenko told his counterpart.

The Belarusian president promised to strictly adhere to the agreements with Cuba. “If they have additional proposals, we are prepared to consider them,” he added.

On January 29, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order authorizing tariffs on imports from countries that supply oil to Cuba and declared a national emergency due to the alleged Cuban threat to US national security.

This measure exacerbated fuel shortages on the island, affecting electricity generation, transportation, food production, healthcare, and education.
