On Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum accused the United States of trying to cause divisions within her security cabinet and influence Mexican electoral processes by praising certain public officials.

Such practices seek to weaken “independent governments that defend sovereignty,” she responded when asked whether U.S. praise for Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch conceals an intention to position him favorably for future electoral contests in Mexico.
On Aug. 18, the director of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Terrance Cole, described Garcia Harfuch as a “trusted partner” and “a good friend.”
His statements came during an international drug conference in Buenos Aires and amid bilateral friction over the revocation of U.S. visas for various Mexican governors and officials.
“They think they will generate division by speaking well of some and badly of others. But they fail at that because there is a lot of coordination and patriotism among everyone in defending Mexico,” Sheinbaum emphasized.
She also attributed the attempts at interference to the U.S. political process ahead of the midterm elections, because “in Washington, they often use Mexico as part of their election.”
“As we have said, let them take care of the affairs over there. We will take care of our affairs here and coordinate with them,” Sheinbaum said, acknowledging that the relationship with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has been complex because of trade disputes and differences over security.
“We must act with reason and principles, not with our stomach or our heart, because we must remain composed in those moments,” she said, and assured that U.S. authorities have understood Mexico’s interest in preserving its sovereignty.
On Wednesday, Presidential legal adviser Luisa Maria Alcalde recalled the recent reforms approved to protect national sovereignty against external interference.
“Broadcasting political propaganda from foreign governments on radio and television was prohibited, and foreign intervention was prohibited by establishing the annulment of elections if interference is proven,” she pointed out at Sheinbaum’s press conference.
