Cuba intervenes in plenary session of the Global Environment Fund

The Cuban head of Science, Technology and Environment, Armando Rodríguez, spoke on behalf of his country at the Eighth Plenary of the Fund for the Environment, which meets in Uzbekistan.

In his speech before the plenary session held in the Uzbek city of Samarkand, on June 4 and 5, Rodríguez recalled the complexity of the various current crises and the increasing severity of environmental impacts, particularly for developing countries, which limits the ability of governments to meet their environmental goals for 2030.

Armando Rodríguez also urged donors to increase their financial resources in a predictable, tangible and growing manner and recognized the Fund as a strategic partner for the financing of environmental and climate projects, indicating the government’s willingness to expand existing cooperation based on current windows and modalities.

The Cuban minister announced the recent decision to establish a Board of Directors for Environmental and Climate Finance in the country, aimed at making greater and better use of the financial resources that are mobilized.

Before concluding, he made a vehement denunciation of the latest measures promoted by the administration of US President Donald Trump, which also affects the normal functioning of the meteorology, radiology and seismology early warning systems.

Armando Rodríguez recalled that these measures also impact the integrated management of urban solid waste, as well as the normal functioning of universities, educational and research centers, linked to climate, biodiversity and pollution.

Along with the Eighth Assembly, other meetings of the Global Environment Facility were held in Samarkand, such as the 71st Meeting of the Council, the 40th Meeting of the Special Climate Fund and for Least Developed Countries and the sixth Meeting of the Fund for the Global Biodiversity Framework.

All with the objective of evaluating and approving the terms and conditions of the ninth replenishment of the Fund (2026-2030) which will amount to 3.9 trillion US dollars.
