Díaz-Canel reaffirms defense of socialism against imperial threats

The will of resistance and victory of the Cuban people in the face of the aggressive escalation by the United States was highlighted by Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the National Defense Council, at the ceremony commemorating the 65th anniversary of the proclamation of the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution.

More than 50,000 Havana residents attended the commemoration of the momentous event that took place at the iconic corner of 23rd and 12th Streets in Vedado, where Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro declared the socialist character of the Revolution to the world. Before them, Díaz-Canel praised the example of the Cuban social process in the struggle for justice and dignity, not only in the island nation but also throughout the world, recalling Cuba’s decisive support in the struggles for decolonization and against the apartheid regime in Africa.

The president emphasized that today’s achievements in different areas, although precarious due to constant imperialist pressure, are dreams made possible thanks to the Revolution and its socialist commitment to the poor.

However, he condemned the open wounds in the soul of the Cuban nation resulting from the continued imperialist aggression, carried out through successive generations with criminal and inhuman cruelty, which attempts to impose the narrative of Cuba as a failed state. While acknowledging internal errors and contradictions, he argued that the blockade imposed on the island is the main obstacle to its development.

Faced with this scenario, the First Secretary reaffirmed that Socialism is the only guarantee of social justice and the emancipation of the people, as a collective response to the collective punishment imposed on the Cuban people for years for their audacity in sovereignly choosing their own destiny.

In his denunciation of the blockade, he emphasized that Cuba is a threatened state that will not surrender, and despite everything, thanks to socialism, it creates, builds, and will prevail.

He also urged everyone to take note of the lessons of history, 65 years after that feat, and on the centenary of the birth of the historical leader of the Revolution, while emphasizing that Fidel was and is Girón, and embodies the conviction that a united people can defeat imperialism.

“As long as there is a man or woman willing to give their life for the Revolution, we will be victorious. The socialist character is not a phrase of the past but a shield of the present and a guide for the future,” he affirmed.

The day also commemorated the importance of the popular response to the Bay of Pigs invasion in the formation of the unified command of the Revolution and the emergence of the Communist Party of Cuba, which is why this date is considered the founding date of the political organization.

President José Ramón Machado Ventura, commander of the Rebel Army, accompanied the president, along with members of the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party, leaders from the Party, the State, the Government, the Union of Young Communists, mass organizations, the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution, the Revolutionary Armed Forces, and the Ministry of the Interior.

Sixty-five years after that event, numerous acts of revolutionary reaffirmation ratified the Cuban people’s willingness to defend the revolutionary project against any threat, just as the militiamen of that time did in their baptism of fire on the sands of Playa Girón.
